Mullet to be Made a Recreational Only Species?

The The National Mullet Club has launched a major initiative asking the Government to consider making mullet a Recreational Only species.
More slow growing than bass (in UK waters taking 10 years to reach just 3lb - the age at which they begin to spawn, but not every year), large mullet have gained a reputation as the UK's bonefish, because of their incredible fighting power when taken on light tackle. Accessible in the shallowest of water, they are a fish that is available to anglers of all ages and abilities, on the simplest of tackle and the cheapest of bait, but demanding of both angling knowledge and skill, especially the larger specimens that can be 15, 20, maybe 25 years or more old. And yet this supreme and valuable sports fish is not a favourite dining fish, commanding very little value when taken and killed for the market, often to be used as pot-bait. With mullet captures declining in the sports fishery, the NMC is appealing for measures to be taken quickly before the stock, particularly those larger fish that support the recreational fishery are lost for a generation of anglers. The National Mullet Club is calling upon all anglers to write to the Government, and their own MPs, asking them to support the proposals. Further details of the proposals, and how to help, can be found by clicking on the menu to the left of this page. |
