Lyme Bay Closed to Trawling

DEFRA announced today that 60 miles of Lyme Bay will be closed to all bottom trawling and scallop-dredging to protect features important to the area's marine ecology.

Many SW beam-trawlers have recently converted to scallop-dredging as a response to the high fuel costs of beam-trawling.

There is now concern that there will be an increase in the amount of static gear deployed in the area, including gill-netting, now that the risk of gear being towed away has been removed.
