Sothern European fishermen had hoped to increase the ratio of shark fins to body weight that can be landed to 6.5%. However protests by anglers and NGOs were supported by UK Conservative MEP Struan Stevenson who moved an amendment to reduce the ratio to just 2%. The final amended report was supported 483 votes to 58 (with 21 abstentions). The commission that was in favour of the original proposal will have the final say, but must take into consideration the result of the EU Parliament vote. (Note - reports decision to maintain current 5% ratio until review concluded by the Commission) Text of EU Debate (some way down) |
