Windfarms - Thames Array Approved

Dec 18,2006 SACN

The green light has been given for two offshore wind farms in the Thames Estuary, one of which will be the world's biggest when it is completed.

Because each turbine will be surrounded by a 50metre safety zone, the windfarms are expected to become de-facto Marine Protected Areas, providing refuges for fish in a very large area of the Thames Estuary.

At the end of November representatives of the NFFO walked out of a meeting with the DTI because they weren't making any headway in opposing rules that require a 50metre exlusion zone around each installation during operation (500 metres during construction).
