Catching Mackerel

Jan 24,2007 SACN

"The largest UK owned pelagic vessel, the Altaire, made its first landing to our factory in three and a half years last week. The 76.2m mid-water trawler made a landing of 1900 tonnes, the largest single landing our factory has had and reputed to be the biggest ever in Scotland for human consumption."

Shetland Catch

"Irish fishermen will be allowed to resume mackerel catches this week following an agreement reached in Brussels yesterday.

Irish trawlers had been banned from fishing for the species as punishment for the illegal landing of mackerel by certain Irish boats in Scotland between 2001 and 2004..........

......... Fishermen's groups have welcomed the move, claiming some members were facing "a major financial catastrophe" if they weren't allowed to resume catches before the end of the mackerel season."
