Brighton's West Pier to Become New Reef?

Oct 29,2006 SACN

The remains of Brighton's West Pier have become an attraction as a haven for wildlife, and spectacular views of thousands of starlings flying in cartwheeling patterns across the sky over their derelict home are now world famous.

But what few see is the abundance of marine wildlife that has also made the structure their home beneath the water line.

Now there are agreed proposals to remove the wreckage, potentially destroying what has now become a wildlife refuge both above and below the waterline.

But one person has different ideas and has interested the authorities in his idea that the wreckage be used to creat a multifunctional reef.

Sean sets out his ideas and appeals for help on his website  h e r e  and appeals for support in having his proposals accepted.

So, if you too are inspired by this idea and want to give Sean a hand, write to Brighton and Hove council saying that you support the proposals, and contact Sean via his website.

If the ideas come to fruition, it could provide a boost not only to recreational species along that part of the Sussex coast, but to the whole marine ecology of the area.
