A crucial meeting between Fisheries minister Jonathan Shaw, bass anglers and commercial bass fishermen will take place today (1 Oct) to help decide whether the minimum landing size (MLS) for bass should rise from 36cm to 40cm.
The proposed measure was given the go-ahead more than 12 months ago by previous Fisheries minister Ben Bradshaw, yet after a concerted effort from commercial fishermen saying that raising the MLS would mean huge quantities of dead bass being thrown back from trawlers and netters (discards), it was put on hold for further investigation.
