There have been a number of influential reports produced by ICES over recent years detailing the developing fishery for bass, the status of the fishery, and recommendations for future management.
Although the observation from the 2004 report that bass appears to be being fished sustainably is often quoted in response to calls for greater protection for the species, extensive caveats to that advice are ignored with most of the reports emphasising the uncertainty of the data, and the need to prevent effort increasing.
